The Atheists in Kenya Society(AIK) hailed Martha Karua upon her nomination as Raila Odinga's running mate.

In a statement, the society's leader Mumia says the move was a smart one considering what Martha's experience in public service and justice adds to the table. The society also stated that Karua's nomination is a great win for women who have for a long time struggled to be on the same level as their male counterparts.

"The atheist in Kenya society applauds the nomination of Martha Karua as the running mate nominee of the Azimio Kenya political coalition.

"The move is not only right but also smart. She brings to the position years of leadership and deep expertise in civil society, human rights, constitutionalism and democratic governance," the statement read.

Further, the society says they look forward to working with the former minister to protect and promote the right of girls across the nation.

"Our society looks forward to working with her to continue the important work of advancing the rights of women and girls in Kenya," the statement read further.

While making the announcement on Monday, May 16, Raila said he had settled on Karua because she is a fighter and not a quitter.

“At the age of 24, this woman was appointed a magistrate, years later she became the youngest woman MP, she led a team of lawyers to represent me when I was in detention, this woman is a fighter and not a quitter,” Raila described Karua.

Karua who immediately accepted her nomination said the moment had come for women to also shine.
