Maraga mourns Otieno Odek: ‘He was a distinguished judge and prolific legal scholar’

Court of Appeal Judge Otieno Odek has died at his home in Kisumu, the Judiciary communication team confirms.

The Judiciary team told K24 Digital that the Appellate Court judge was preparing to go to work when suddenly collapsed.

Professor Tom Ojienda, who was his former partner, said he was waiting for the judge in at the High Court in Kisumu where he had a matter before him.

Reliable sources said said the judge was found dead in his home on Monday morning.

Some of the judge's staff said they got suspicious when he failed to turn up for work since he is an early riser.

The concerned staff went to check up on him and found him dead.

"I am deeply saddened to announce the sudden demise of Justice (Prof) Otieno-Odek, Judge of the Court of Appeal, Kisumu. He was found dead in his house this morning and the cause is yet to be established," said Chief Justice David Maraga.

CJ Maraga said Prof Odek served as the director of the Judiciary Training Institute from 2016 to 2018, having become a judge of the Court of Appeal in 2012.

The CJ praised the departed as a distinguished judge and a prolific legal scholar who was widely published and celebrated across the continent and beyond.
