An Administration Police (AP) constable was Saturday, June 18, arrested in Kyanguni, Kitui County, by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers from Mutomo for falsely obtaining Ksh250,000 from his colleague stationed at Emali Railway Police Station.

Constable Peter Kilonzi Mwove was arrested for obtaining money from Darius Nyamai Kimanzi by pretending he was in a position to influence his transfer to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Officers have since launched investigations, and the constable is expected to be arraigned in court.

“The officer was arrested at Kyanguni town for the offence, and he will be arraigned as soon as investigations are complete,” a senior officer told K24 Digital.

Another police officer arrested

The arrest comes barely a week after another Corporal Kennedy Okello Ojode, attached to the DCI Academy, was charged in court with obtaining Sh250, 000 from a woman by pretending he could secure her employment in the National Police Service.

She was never recruited and later learned that she had been defrauded.

The arraignment brings to at least eight police officers who have been charged in court with various offences, including murder, rape, and assault.

Cases of extortion have been on the rise across the country.

According to police oversight bodies, rogue officers have been arresting members of the public on trumped-up charges with the sole intention of extorting money from them.

Since May, at least 20 officers have been arrested for various criminal offences.
