All Modern Coast bus drivers will undergo refresher road safety course before they are allowed to transport passengers, Modern Coast Express Limited has said.

The decision, the company said, was arrived at following a meeting the firm’s managers had with road safety regulator, NTSA, on Friday, December 13.

“We had a consultative meeting with NTSA this morning on formulating a workable solution to have our transport license reinstated. In line with our commitment to full compliance of safety regulations, we have agreed to submit all our buses for inspection by NTSA starting tomorrow [Saturday, December 14]. We have also made arrangements for all our drivers to be available for a refresher training course on road safety that will be facilitated by NTSA,” said Modern Coast Express Limited in their Friday statement.

“As a result of the measures above, we would like to notify our passengers that all buses scheduled to travel from December 12, 2019 to December 15, 2019 will not be operational. All affected passengers will be refunded via M-Pesa to the [phone] number quoted on their tickets as from Monday December 16, 2019.”

The long-distance transporter’s operating license was withdrawn by NTSA on Thursday, December 12, after two of the firm’s buses collided head-on at Kiongwani, Makueni County on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Seven travellers were killed, and at least 60 others injured in the grisly crash.
