Residents of Mugumoini village in Maragua have been left in shock after members of Akorino were found conducting a ritual in a church compound.

Eight members are said to have had canoes inside Mugumoini Catholic church on Sunday night where they lit up fire and slaughtered a goat to offer a burnt sacrifice.

According to the church leaders, they had not been notified of such activity and they were shocked to get an alert from one of the locals that something suspicious was happening within the church compound.

Jennifer Wangari, a church elder, said after receiving a tip-off from the members of the public, she informed other elders and they rushed to the church compound.

"We found them having slaughtered a goat and splashed regurgitated stuff on the tree claiming it was for cleansing the compound.

"We asked them why they came to our church without even seeking consent from us and they said God had directed them to come here to pray for the country," Wangari said.

Samuel Gachoya, the chairman of the church, said two of the members ran away but those left behind claimed that they had gone to get another goat for a second sacrifice.

"They claimed that the first sacrifice was for cleansing the compound and they were planning to do the actual sacrifice," he said.

Gachoya said the members said they did not have anywhere else they could offer the sacrifice as traditionally such rituals were conducted under the Mugumo tree.

"This was very queer as they performed the rituals at night and it also raises suspicions on what their motive could be," he added.

The six members, who were left behind, were taken to Kagumoini Police Station where they recorded statements before being released.
