Nine people were on Thursday evening (December 26) confirmed dead and several others injured after a minibus collided head-on with a matatu near Nangili Market on the Eldoret-Kitale road.

The minibus was headed to Matunda from Luanda in Vihiga County, when it smashed against the Eldoret-bound matatu in the 3:40pm incident.

The driver of the minibus, the tout, a passenger and two occupants of the matatu died on the spot, whereas four others died at the Likuyani Sub-County Hospital, where they had been taken for treatment, police said.

Also on board in the matatu were six goats that died.

An eyewitness, who spoke in confidence, told K24 Digital that the driver of the minibus rammed the oncoming matatu when he swerved to avoid hitting sheep that were crossing the road.

Likuyani OCPD, Boniface Lisiolo, confirmed the incident to K24 Digital, saying a probe into the crash has begun.

It is said the driver of the matatu was not familiar with the route.

More soon.
