Eight robbery with violence suspects escaped from Thika police station in unclear circumstances on Wednesday night.

Among the suspects who escaped include those who on November 19 last year carjacked a woman and later raped her in turns as they made demands for more money from the woman’s friends and relatives.

The officer in charge of the cells, Constable Amos Muteti, said he was called by one of the remandees who requested him to take him to the toilet.

The suspects tricked an officer

The officer alleged that as he opened the cells’ door, he was attacked by the remandees using kicks and blows.

They then forcefully took the key from him which they used to open the door before nine of the suspects escaped.

“Alarm was raised and the officers who responded managed to re-arrest one of the remandees, who has been identified as Joseph Githu Nyanguthii, about 500 metres from the station,” police headquarters said.

The suspects had cases pending before court and were being held there briefly after being transferred from the Industrial Area GK Prison.

The escapees have been identified as Livingstone Mwangi Njau, Francis Mwangi Matheri, Allan Njogu Mungai, Charles Nyaga Mitaru, John Mbugua Murege, and Eric Ngigi Musige.

Others are Arthur Ndugu Kavemba and Bunton Kaguku Mbugua alias Bunju.

Njau and Mitaru are among the suspects who had on November 19 last year kidnapped a woman as she headed to work.

Suspects had raped a woman last year

The woman was rescued after a three-hour ordeal in the hands of the robbers. The victim, a fruit vendor at City Park was at the bus stop at the toll station along Thika road when a private car Toyota Raum registration number KBU 265V pulled over and offered her a lift.

However, upon reaching Kenyatta University, the vehicle took the service lane and made a U-turn at Engen petrol station.

The robbers then took possession of the woman’s phone and called her husband, demanding a ransom of Ksh30,000 failure to which they would send him her remains in a body bag.

"All this while, the thugs were raping the woman in turns, as they made demands for more money from the woman’s friends and relatives," DCI said then.

After 3 hours of intelligence leads, the robbers who kept moving from one location to another were finally cornered at a secluded spot in Kabati area in Kandara, Murang’a county.
