A 61-year-old man who is facing charges of defiling an 11-year-old minor has told a Shanzu court that he attempted to defile the minor after she "ate" his money.

Iha Thoya who appeared before Shanzu Senior Principal Magistrate, Yusuf Shikanda in his confession informed the court that he had spent much money on the minor and that was the reason he wanted to defile her.

"Huyu msichana amekuwa ananikula pesa zangu. Nilitaka kuingiza lakini ikakataa kuingia (I've spent money on this girl so I unsuccessfully tried to defile)," he said.

Following his confession, the magistrate issued orders to have the suspect undergo mental assessment to ascertain if he was fit to stand trial.

"The accused is behaving in a weird manner. He should therefore be taken to the hospital for mental assessment," Shiakanda said.

The suspect is facing charges of defilement contrary to section 8(1) as read with section 8(2)of the sexual offences act.

The charges read that on February 3 this year at Dingurukani area, Bamburi location in Kisauni sub-county within Mombasa county he intentionally and unlawfully defiled a child aged 11 years.

He has further been slapped with an additional count of committing an indecent act with a child.

The matter will be mentioned on March 4, 2022.
