A 52-year-old man has been sentenced to serve one-year imprisonment or pay a Ksh30,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to stealing a goose.

Peter Kinyanjui stole the goose worth Ksh5,000 at Majengo estate, Narok town on July 24, 2022, before proceeding to slaughter it in his house.

The owner of the goose, Rhodah Njeri, told the court that neighbours alerted her after they spotted the culprit carrying one of her geese feeding outside her house.

Upon following the man, they found him slaughtering the goose in his house, he was then arrested by the mob and taken to the Narok Police station.

In mitigation, Kinyanjui asked the court to forgive him saying he had gone days without eating and resorted to stealing instead of dying of hunger.

However, Narok Senior Resident Magistrate Adelaide Sisenda, while reading the sentence, reminded him that it was criminal to take someone’s property without their knowledge.

The magistrate also reminded him of his right to appeal the case if he was not in agreement with the judgement within 14 days.
