5 killed in grisly Mtito Andei road accident

Five people died on the spot and five others were injured after a matatu they were travelling in collided with a lorry at Kanga area near Mtito Andei on Sunday, September 25.

Confirming the accident the Kibwezi Sub-county Police Commander George Kashmir said the deceased included three children aged between 1- 5 years, a woman who is suspected to be the minor's mother and the matatu driver.

The police boss said the driver of the Nairobi-bound matatu was overtaking another vehicle blindly when he caused a head-on collision with the lorry heading to Mombasa at around 11am.

"We have lost five people on the spot. The matatu from Kinatwa Prestige was overtaking another vehicle blindly when it collided head-on with the lorry," Kashmir said.

Kashmir urged motorists to be keen on the road, especially when overtaking to avoid such incidents in the future.

He said stern action will be taken against any driver found flouting traffic rules.

Meanwhile, the injured persons were rushed to Makindu Hospital for treatment while the bodies of the deceased were moved to Makindu Hospital mortuary as police continue with investigations into the crash.
