Police have launched a manhunt for a truck driver who caused an accident at Kikopey along the Gilgil-Nakuru road, killing five people.

The accident happened on Sunday around 8:30 pm, involving a Mercedes-Benz truck whose full registration was not visible.

The police said that the driver was heading towards Nakuru when he lost control and hit two male adult pedestrians killing them on the spot.

The driver also hit iron sheet structures near the road, killing three people who were playing a pool table game.

"The same vehicle rammed onto iron sheet structures a few metres from the road killing three male adult persons who were inside playing pool table game. The same trailer caused massive damage to property, including three motor vehicles that were at a yard; a Land Rover, Peugeot 405 and Isuzu Trooper," the National Police Service said in a statement.

The driver is said to have fled the scene of the accident and gone into hiding.

"Efforts to arrest the driver of the ill-fated vehicle are underway after he escaped the scene of the accident," the police added.

The bodies of the deceased persons have been moved to the Gilgil sub-county hospital mortuary.
