Five suspects arrested yesterday by Nairobi County government officials over the theft of Ksh184,000 medical supplies have been arraigned before court.

Humphrey Mmbihi Magui, John Edwin Muchoki Kiema, Antony Mugweru Micheru, Paul Kanyua Karanja, Wanjiru Wangari Gituku faced three charges of stealing health commodities from the Ministry of Health and possession of stolen property.

According to the charge sheet, they stole 20 urine specimen collection containers from the Ministry of Health worth Ksh184,000.

Muchoki, Mugweru and Kanyu were separately charged with dishonestly causing the stealing of the medical supplies and being in possession of same.

They are alleged to have committed the offences at Kilimani area within Nairobi county on February 21, 2023.

Through their lawyer, they urged the court to grant them reasonable bail terms. They also asked to be furnished with witness statements that the prosecution intends to rely on during the trial.

Prosecutor Anderson Gikunda did not oppose their release on bail.

Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina granted each of the five suspects a cash bail of Ksh100,000.

The prosecution of the five accused persons comes after they were arrested Tuesday by Nairobi City County Enforcement team for allegedly being in possession of health services commodities and supplies.

Detectives arrested Muchoki, Mugweru and Kanyu who were operating a Toyota van full of stolen medicines, which were recently flagged off by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for distribution to public health facilities.

The case will be mentioned on March 7 for pretrial.
