Two men died on Tuesday night after a fight over a Ksh20 debt in Nyeri town.

A police report seen by K24 Digital indicates that Kelvin Wachira Mugo, aged 20, was stabbed in the neck by one Githinji near Naivas supermarket at around 7:00 pm after a disagreement over the unsettled debt.

Police on the beat responded to the scene and rushed Mugo to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital with the knife still lodged in the neck. Unfortunately, the victim who ran a cart business in the busy town, was declared dead on arrival.

Angered by the attack, members of the public hunted down the suspect who had gone into hiding and subjected him to mob justice, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

He was rushed to the same hospital but was also pronounced dead on arrival.

"The report went viral within the town where the members of public traced the suspect and subjected him to mob injustice. Officers tried and managed to rescue the said suspect who had sustained serious head injuries to the same PGH hospital where he was also pronounced dead on arrival," the police report reads in part.

A witness told K24 Digital that the two had earlier argued over the debt but were separated by their colleagues before Githinji proceeded to his house and picked a kitchen knife which he used in the attack.

Githinji is also said to have attacked another person in a similar manner in 2018. He went under before resurfacing recently.

"The same suspect (Githinji) had earlier stabbed and killed another person in the year 2018 and went missing since then until recently when he resurfaced," police added.

The bodies of the deceased persons were moved to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
