Two people have been confirmed dead and several injured after a bus belonging to Kenya Defence Forces rammed into a 14-seater matatu at Dundori area in Bahati, Nakuru County on Friday evening.

The accident happened near Lanet Barracks at around 6:50pm after the fully-occupied 33-seater bus lost control and smashed onto the rear part of the matatu belonging to Nyamakima Sacco.

It is suspected that the bus’s braking system failed, resulting in the accident.

“The bus, thereafter, landed in a ditch outside Dundori Police Station, whereas the matatu hurtled towards a petrol station right opposite the police post,” an eye witness told K24 Digital.

We understand that several vendors, who were selling their merchandise on the roadsides, were also injured in the accident.

“Several victims, who were strewn across the road, suffered broken limbs,” an eye witness said.

A medical expert on ground, who was with the KDF team, told K24 Digital that two of the victims died on the spot.

Nakuru County Police Commander, Stephen Matu, also confirmed to K24 Digital the number of fatalities recorded.

“However, I am yet to receive formal communication from the area OCPD in regard to the total number of victims injured in the crash,” he said.

Shortly after the accident occurred, the KDF officers cordoned off the scene, preventing journalists from accessing it.

The deceased were taken to Nakuru Level 5 Hospital morgue, and the injured rushed to the same health facility.
