Two police officers have been arrested for alleged robbery in Tharaka South.

In a statement by DCI, the duo, sergeant John Lekidayo and constable Kelvin Kinyua, both based at Nkubu police station were linked to a theft case where a lorry ferrying hardware goods worth 600,000 was blocked and intercepted.

The lorry that was headed to Tharaka Nithi from Isiolo is said to have been blocked at Ura gate by a group of four who claimed to be police officers.

The quartet claimed the lorry was ferrying counterfeit goods.

The four who were armed with an AK-47 would later order the lorry's driver with his two other loaders to alight and they handcuffed them.

The three Morris Nyaga, David Kuyo and Bonface Orito were bundled into the white Toyota fielder that had been used to block the lorry and left with two of the four. They were later driven off towards Kacibine market in Imenti central and dumped.

The three reported the incident to Kiagu police post, and preliminary investigations have established that the car involved in the incident, belonged to sergeant Lekidayo.

"Further investigations revealed that Lekidayo was in charge of the armoury on the day of the incident and had issued an AK-47 rifle to his accomplice Kinyua. The two then proceeded for unspecified duties that were not booked at the station raising more suspicion on their whereabouts, during the time when the incident is reported to have occurred," part of the statement read.

"Meanwhile, the lorry which had ferried the goods was found abandoned while empty, indicating that the goods may have been offloaded to another vehicle," the statement further read.
