Fifteen (15) members of one family from Kagawet Village in Itembe Location, Bomet County have been quarantined at Kaplong Girls’ High School after they allegedly came into contact with a relative who died of coronavirus complications.

Ernest Kosgei, 55, is said to have travelled from Nairobi on May 4, and upon arriving in Bomet, he was taken to Longisa County Referral Hospital, where he was diagnosed with diabetes, and, consequently, admitted to the facility.

The following day (May 5), Kosgei died at 1pm. His samples were taken to KEMRI-Kisumu, where COVID-19 tests on them returned a positive result.

As a result, Health officials in Bomet, led by Public Health Officer, Micah Koech, and Disease Surveillance Coordinator for Central Bomet, Erick Mitei, launched a mission to trace Kosgei’s contact.

Fifteen (15) persons from Kagawet Village -- all of them related to Kosgei -- were, on Wednesday, May 13, tracked down and placed under mandatory quarantine at Kaplong Girls’ High School.

The 15 comprise seven male persons and eight female persons, whose ages range from 2 years old to 63 years old.

Authorities are still pursuing Kosgei’s cousin, identified only as Geoffrey, who took Kosgei to hospital on May 4.

The matter was reported at Bomet Police Station on Wednesday 3am by the county’s public health officer, Micah Koech.
