13 pupils killed in stampede at Kakamega Primary School

At least 13 school children have died following a stampede at Kakamega Primary School in Kakamega town on Monday evening.

Police said 39 others escaped with injuries and were admitted at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital (KCRH) and other nearby medical facilities.

The bodies were ferried to the KCRH mortuary.

According to the Kakamega Town Sub County Police Commander David Kabena, one pupil was admitted at the KCRH in critical condition and 39 others with serious injuries while 20 were treated and discharged.

Kabena said the stampede occurred as the pupils rushed from their classroom which is on the third floor of a new building in the school.

Police said they have started investigations to establish what triggered the the stampede.

The school has over 3,000 pupils.

At the time of the incident, the headmaster Dickson Wanyangu was not at the school.
