Police in Bungoma have detained 11 St Mary's Kibabii High School students for allegedly planning and attempting to burn a dormitory.

In a report seen by K24 Digital, the school principal, Nicodemus Ogeto, told the police that teachers had notified him that they had smelt petrol in one of the school dorms.

“Police officers visited the scene, conducted a thorough search in the dormitory that houses 200 students. They found a bottle containing petrol hidden under one of the beds,” said the report filed at Kibabii Police Station.

Additionally, the police also realised that six blankets had been splashed with petrol at the scene.

The officers interrogated a number of students, leading to the arrest of 11 of them.

All the students from the affected dormitory were given an alternative place to sleep for the night, with several police officers left behind to monitor the situation.

Their arrest comes just a day after 10 students were arraigned for allegedly torching a dormitory at Kiambere Secondary school.

Cases of students going on the rampage and destroying school property through fires have been on the rise.
