A 14-seater matatu swerved off the road and crashed along the Nairobi-Garissa road in Kitui, killing 11 people on the spot and injuring others on Saturday night, June 5.

Confirming the incident, Jacob Mueti Sammy, the area Assistant Chief noted that the victims of the accident were heading back home from a dowry negotiation held in Mbondoni, Mwingi county.

According to Mueti, in an attempt to overtake another car, the driver lost control and swerved off the road before rolling several times.

Police believe that the driver was carrying excess passengers following the number of people injured.

Those injured were rushed to the Kitui Level 4 hospital, Matuu hospital in Machakos county, and the Kenyatta referral hospital in Nairobi county whereas bodies of the deceased were taken to Kitui Level 4 hospital morgue.
