One person was killed on Sunday by armed gunmen who raided Nosukro village in Baringo South as residents were being enumerated by census staff.

Mukutani Chief Benjamin Lecher confirmed the incident, saying the suspected bandits targeted internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had returned from Eldume area where they set up camp after eviction many years ago.

The IDPs had travelled to Nosukro village to participate in the ongoing 2019 census.

Baringo South politician Bonface Lesaris condemned the incident.

Mr Lesaris accused the Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya of giving false hopes to Baringo residents for assuring residents of a peaceful census operation.

He called on the government to act swiftly to protect vulnerable residents.
