Google-owned video-streaming platform YouTube has unveiled its premium package for Kenyan users.

The ad-free plan at a monthly fee of Ksh500 for individuals and Ksh949 for a family scheme will allow subscribers to access uninterrupted viewing, play videos in the background and download videos for offline viewing.

YouTube Premium subscribers will also automatically receive YouTube Music and can listen to songs offline without advertisement.

YouTube said subscribers would also experience other exclusive features such as the ‘Smart Search’ to help them discover songs even with partial lyrics, an ‘Activity Bar’ for quick navigation to playlists and personalised mixes and an ‘Explore Tab’ for new and popular music.

“Additionally, the ‘Related Tab’ offers a curated music experience based on the current listening choice, while 'Song Lyrics' provide an interactive element synchronised with the music," part of the statement reads.

Besides Kenya, other African countries where the service was unveiled include Ghana and Senegal.

YouTube Premium is set to accelerate competition with other music platforms including Spotify, Boomplay, and Apple Music among others.

The platform has, however, not elaborated if the new feature will benefit creators.
