Thursday, November 17, 2022, was all media and colours at the USIU-Africa as it celebrated an event dubbed ‘Media Day’ with an all-night vibe session of entertainment after a day packed with food, drinks, panel discussions, and interaction with media personnel.

The event which was officially launched by the incoming Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Margee Ensign brought together lecturers, students from within and outside the USIU-Africa community, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK), media practitioners, and brands like Boom Play Africa

Being an initiative of the university’s Journalism club and USIU-Radio, the event provided a proper platform for networking with students from other universities like Africa Nazarene University and the people in the media industry.

Entertainment night

What started with panel discussions inside the university’s auditorium, picked tempo through interactions to an electrified entertainment world in the night.

Notably, two feature films done by the students; Second Chances and Remember, were screened during the panel discussions in an initiative meant to promote creativity and expand the visibility of the campus’s filming capabilities.

The evening was indeed fun-packed as students got engaged in shoutouts and enjoyed giveaways of the day.

And it was also a golden opportunity for the students to showcase their talents; from singing, dancing, and modelling to rapping. Games, like the classic Kenyan game Jenga, provided more room for networking.

The Wave

The music was provided by Vybes radio, with an entertainment crew dubbed ‘The Beyond wave’ which is popularly known to the students as ‘The Wave’ keeping the event going.

The Wave was making a comeback at the USIU-Africa campus as the 8th edition of Wave 360 Campus jamdown after a hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In as much as the jamdown session was student-led, hosts ZJ Heno and Sura Common, were in charge of the mic.

At the start of the entertainment session, a dance battle between the students was organized. The Straight-Up Live scouts, three in total, had the opportunity to view all the performances from the judge’s seat with the sole intention of fishing out talented dancers from the jamdown.

It was then time to colour the night as the students took to the open space for the colour festival and photograph session. As all the colour reduced, the hype went higher as more performances and rap sessions were welcomed. The numbers kept increasing as the night went on.

More party, more vibes

The fashion show session started with a bang, as expected, with contestants showcasing their fashion and modelling talents. The Mr. and Mrs. USIU 2021 contestants were the first to open up the scene. Then the university’s current 2022 contestants swung in both casual wear and dinner wear as they closed off the fashion show session.

"The Media Day was a real connection to the outside world and opened our eyes to the future of new media. I am so glad the evening's entertainment session has been a success and the students have passed the vibe check," Joy Wanyoike, one of the event organizers said.

The event ended with more music as attendees left at their own discretion.
