Police in Zanzibar are holding in custody a youthful man accused of stealing clothes from a Tanzanian journalist.

On June 2, the man jumped over Farouk Karim’s gate and stole clothes hanged on the washing line before stashing them in a sack. However, instead of climbing over the gate to escape, the thief is said to have gone to one of the abandoned vehicles in the compound, where he dozed off.

“He managed to easily climb over my gate because we do not have a security guard,” said Farouk as quoted by Global Publishers.

“In the morning, we found him sleeping on the driver’s seat in one of our vehicles, with the stolen clothes placed next to him. We immediately called police who came and took him away.

“I cannot explain what made him doze off at the scene of crime, but I think [my] prayers did… I am a very a prayerful person. Before I slept, I asked God to protect us from our enemies throughout the night,” said Farouk.

It remains unclear whether the suspect, whose identity wasn’t immediately established, was released from police custody or arraigned.
