Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has honoured slain Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop after her tragic death.

Tirop’s untimely demise moved the celebrated actress, terming it an utterly senseless death, as she condoled with the mourning family.

“I'm honouring Agnes Tirop just months ago, we celebrated Agnes as she represented Kenya at the Olympics. Now, we tragically mourn her utterly senseless death. Sending my deep condolences, love and strength to her loved ones,” Lupita said.

Tirop, a two-time world 10,000 metres bronze medalist, was found dead in her bedroom in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County last week with visible stab wounds on her abdomen.

The athlete's estranged lover and coach, Ibrahim Rotich, was later arrested in connection with her death.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that its sleuths nabbed Ibrahim Rotich in Changamwe, Mombasa County as he tried to cross to a neighbouring country.

“Ibrahim Rotich, who was in a relationship with the athlete, was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa County, as he tried to flee to a neighbouring country to evade justice,” the statement read in part.

The suspect is believed to have murdered the athlete by stabbing her before going into hiding.

Police report that Rotich was involved in a road accident in Mlolongo as he attempted to desperately escape from arrest.

The suspect is currently being held at the Changamwe police station as detectives process him for arraignment in court.
