The Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community (LGBTQ+) is probably the most frowned upon group, especially here in Kenya. Kenya prides itself as a traditional and Christian country and this community is having it difficult when it comes to their rights and being fully accepted. Despite that, there are a few celebrities who have publicly come out as lesbians and they are openly living their truth.

Former BBC journalist Makena Njeri had to top the list as she has not shied away when it comes to matters LGBTQ. During a TED talk that made her trend for days, Makena publicly came out and revealed that she is gay.

‘My name is Chris Njeri Makena. I am happy, I am free and I am bold. For a very long time, I could never introduce myself like this but somewhere along the journey, I started to discover what it meant to live your truth. I started to discover who I was and I decided to be loyal to my authenticity’….she said during a TED talk.

She is probably the boldest LGBTQ member after she started her own network, Bold Network Africa, with an aim of educating Africans on the rights of members of the LGBTQ and to know more about the community.

Anita Nderu

Anita Nderu became a topic of discussion in 2020 after she came out as a member of the LGBTQ. Her coming out was filled with both hate and love from her fans.

‘I hope my kids never have to go through what I have gone through for being LGBTQ+’..she tweeted.

Today, she is married to a man, a wedding that caught many by surprise.

Brenda Jons

Brenda Jons made headlines last year, not because of her comedy but after she went live on Instagram to publicly announce that she is gay. At that time, she was accusing Phoina (celebrity makeup artist) of stealing her girlfriend. She is probably the newest member.

"Mimi ni lesbian, nimeshawaambia. Muandike. Here is my girlfriend. Phoina beauty ameniibia dame. Here is my girlfriend. Mscreenshot saa hii. Nimependa msichana guys. I am gay. I am very gay. Acha wapost picha, mimi sijali. Hata wapost wakiwa Mombasa," Brenda Jons said in an Instagram live.
